A commercial fisherman, going to sea with his father in 1973, he gained his Master’s certificate of Competence in 1986 and sailed in that position out of English ports until 1994 when he joined a nautical training school as senior instructor, and operating manager of up to 12 sea-going training vessels working throughout Europe and into the Mediterranean area.
During this time, he also undertook consulting for law firms, police departments and insurance companies, investigating marine incidents and accidents in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. He has been deposed and presented evidence to various courts, hearings and tribunals on more than 200 occasions over his career to date (2021).
In 2003, he moved to the United States and joined Landfall Navigation to run their developing Marine Training Center, gaining various authorities from both state bodies and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). On being granted citizenship in 2008, he also gained his US Master’s license and now has the distinction of being licensed under both United Kingdom and United States authorities.
Leaving Landfall in 2006, he joined the safety department of Moran Towing Corporation and was responsible for investigations, safety audits and inspections of ship-assist tugs operating throughout the US eastern seaboard and gulf coasts, including Puerto Rico, liaising with the USCG, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and other industry and regulatory bodies.
In 2014, he was appointed as State of Connecticut Harbor Master for the City of Stamford and served in that position for 6-years, until retiring in December 2020.
He has received training and certification from USCG, ABS, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Towing Vessel Inspection Bureau (TVIB) as well as the British Maritime and Coastguard Agency (UK-MCGA), and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). He has been awarded a Master of Science Degree (MSc.) in Marine Surveying from Middlesex University and Lloyds Maritime Academy of London, following 8 years of study and research.
In his spare time, he fishes from his 23’ Steigercraft sport fishing boat Little Bear out of Lewes, DE and maintains his grandson’s boat Farquaad, the Sequel, a 21’ Mako center console based in Stamford CT.
